Suicidal ideation, which refers to recurring thoughts about death, dying, or ending one’s life, is one of the most frightening experiences a person can go through. It is also far more common than most people realize. For many who experience these thoughts, they are not a sign of weakness or a permanent state of mind. They are a signal that the brain is in overwhelming pain and that the level of support currently in place is not enough.
At Complete Mind Care of PA, we provide outpatient treatment for adults experiencing suicidal ideation connected to underlying conditions such as major depressive disorder and treatment-resistant depression, at our Villanova and Horsham locations. Our board-certified psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and licensed psychotherapists work together to build a coordinated plan that addresses the root causes driving these thoughts, with the goal of lasting stability, not just crisis management.
If you are in immediate danger, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. For ongoing support and outpatient care, we are here.
Suicidal ideation rarely exists in isolation. In the vast majority of cases, it is a symptom of an underlying mental health condition, most commonly major depressive disorder, treatment-resistant depression, or other mood disorders that have not yet received adequate treatment. This is why addressing suicidal thoughts effectively means treating the underlying condition driving them, not just managing the immediate crisis.
At Complete Mind Care, our approach to suicidal ideation is grounded in this understanding. We offer advanced, FDA-approved treatments that target the neurological and psychological roots of the conditions most commonly associated with suicidal thinking, giving patients a real path toward relief rather than simply stabilization.
Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or rTMS, is a non-invasive, drug-free brain stimulation therapy that uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate regions of the brain involved in mood regulation. For patients whose suicidal ideation is connected to major depressive disorder or treatment-resistant depression, rTMS addresses the neurological underpinnings of the condition that is generating those thoughts.
rTMS requires no anesthesia, no sedation, and no recovery time. Sessions last approximately 20 minutes and are delivered five days per week over four to six weeks. Patients drive themselves to and from each session and return to daily life immediately afterward. Our founders built and operated a 35-location TMS practice before establishing our Villanova and Horsham offices, giving our team an uncommon depth of clinical expertise in TMS protocols for complex and treatment-resistant presentations.
Please note that rTMS for suicidal ideation as a standalone diagnosis is not currently covered by most insurance plans. However, when suicidal ideation is connected to a covered diagnosis such as major depressive disorder, coverage may apply. Our billing team will review your specific situation and explain all available options during your consultation.
Deep TMS, or dTMS, is the most advanced form of transcranial magnetic stimulation available and uses BrainsWay’s patented H-Coil technology to reach deeper brain structures and a wider range of neural pathways than standard TMS systems. For patients with treatment-resistant depression or major depressive disorder associated with suicidal thoughts, dTMS offers a clinically supported option that addresses the condition at its neurological source.
dTMS is FDA-cleared for major depressive disorder and anxious depression, both of which frequently co-occur with suicidal ideation. When suicidal thinking is a feature of these covered diagnoses, dTMS may be eligible for insurance coverage. Our billing and authorization team handles prior authorization and will confirm your coverage picture before treatment begins.
Both our Villanova and Horsham locations are certified BrainsWay Deep TMS providers. We serve patients across Montgomery County, Delaware County, the Main Line, and the broader Philadelphia region.
Spravato, the brand name for esketamine nasal spray, holds a specific FDA approval for adults with major depressive disorder with acute suicidal ideation or behavior, making it one of the most directly indicated treatments for this presentation available in outpatient psychiatry. This approval is distinct from its approval for treatment-resistant depression and reflects the unique speed and mechanism by which esketamine works.
Unlike traditional antidepressants that can take weeks to reach therapeutic effect, Spravato has demonstrated measurable symptom improvement in as little as 24 hours in clinical studies. For patients experiencing acute suicidal thoughts, that speed of action is clinically meaningful. Spravato targets NMDA receptors in the brain, a mechanism of action that differs fundamentally from conventional antidepressants and can produce rapid reductions in depressive symptoms and suicidal thinking.
Spravato is administered at our certified clinic locations in Villanova and Horsham under the direct supervision of trained medical staff. You self-administer the nasal spray in three doses spaced five minutes apart, then remain in our care for two hours of observation. Because Spravato can temporarily affect perception, you will need to arrange transportation in advance. Treatment is typically scheduled twice per week for the first month, then reduced in frequency based on your clinical response.
Please note that insurance coverage for Spravato in the context of suicidal ideation varies by plan and diagnosis. Our billing team will verify your eligibility and walk you through your options before your first session.
Psychotherapy is a cornerstone of effective treatment for suicidal ideation and works alongside brain stimulation therapies and medication to address the thought patterns, emotional pain, and behavioral responses that sustain suicidal thinking over time. At Complete Mind Care, our licensed psychotherapists are trained in evidence-based approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy, which helps patients identify and reshape the catastrophic and hopeless thinking patterns most closely associated with suicidal ideation, and dialectical behavior therapy skills, which build distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and crisis management tools.
Therapy provides a consistent, confidential space to process the pain underlying suicidal thoughts and to build a sustainable foundation of coping skills and support. It is most effective when delivered as part of a coordinated plan alongside medical and brain-based treatments, which is exactly the model we use at Complete Mind Care.
We offer early morning and evening appointments at both our Villanova and Horsham locations, and our clinical team coordinates across disciplines to ensure nothing falls through the cracks in your care.
Treatment for suicidal ideation as a standalone diagnosis is not currently covered by most major insurance plans. However, many of our patients seeking care for suicidal ideation also carry a primary diagnosis of major depressive disorder or treatment-resistant depression, which are covered conditions for rTMS, dTMS, and in some cases Spravato. Psychotherapy is covered under standard mental health benefits for qualifying patients.
Our billing team will conduct a thorough review of your coverage and help identify the maximum benefits available to you before any treatment begins. We are in-network with Aetna, AmeriHealth, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Geisinger, Humana, Independence Blue Cross, Medicare, Optum, Tricare, UnitedHealthcare, and UPMC.
