Anxiety disorders affect more than 40 million adults in the United States, causing persistent worry, physical tension, and interference with daily life. When traditional treatments like medication and therapy haven’t provided adequate relief, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) offers an evidence-based alternative. At Complete Mind Care of PA, our experienced team of over 20 board-certified providers offers advanced neuromodulation treatments for anxiety as part of comprehensive brain wellness care.
Our leadership team brings extensive experience from building a successful 35-location TMS practice, giving us deep expertise in neuromodulation treatments. We serve more than 4,500 active patients across our Horsham and Villanova locations with extended hours (7 AM – 8 PM weekdays) to accommodate your schedule.
We understand that anxiety affects every aspect of your life—your work, relationships, sleep, and physical health. Remission is our mission, and we’re committed to exploring every evidence-based approach to help you reclaim control from anxiety. Our goal isn’t just symptom reduction, but getting you better and away from us to go live your life.
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health conditions in America. While everyone experiences occasional worry or nervousness, anxiety disorders involve persistent, excessive fear and worry that interfere with daily activities. Common anxiety disorders include:
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Chronic worry about everyday matters—health, work, finances, family—often accompanied by physical symptoms like muscle tension, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and sleep disturbance.
Panic Disorder: Recurrent, unexpected panic attacks involving intense fear with physical symptoms like rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, and sense of impending doom.
Social Anxiety Disorder: Intense fear of social situations due to concerns about embarrassment, judgment, or negative evaluation by others.
Anxious Depression: Major depressive disorder accompanied by significant anxiety symptoms. This combination is particularly challenging, as anxiety can worsen depression and complicate treatment response.
Traditional first-line treatments include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), benzodiazepines, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. However, many individuals experience inadequate relief from these approaches, or encounter intolerable side effects from medications. This has led researchers and clinicians to investigate complementary approaches like brain stimulation.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) uses focused magnetic pulses to modulate activity in specific brain regions involved in emotional regulation and anxiety processing. TMS is FDA-approved for major depressive disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder, and multiple TMS devices have received FDA clearance specifically for treating anxiety symptoms in adults with major depressive disorder (anxious depression).
Important Note: TMS is FDA-cleared for treating anxiety symptoms in the context of major depressive disorder (anxious depression). TMS for generalized anxiety disorder as a standalone condition is considered investigational. At Complete Mind Care of PA, we offer TMS for anxiety relief based on FDA clearances and emerging research, provided as part of our comprehensive brain wellness approach.
Research has explored TMS targeting the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), a brain region critical for emotional regulation and attention control. Studies suggest TMS may work by enhancing the brain’s ability to regulate anxiety-provoking thoughts and modulating connectivity between cortical control centers and deeper limbic structures involved in fear and worry.
Anxiety involves dysregulation in brain networks responsible for threat detection, emotional processing, and cognitive control. Neuroimaging studies show that individuals with anxiety disorders often have:
TMS delivers magnetic pulses through a coil placed on the scalp, creating small electrical currents that can modulate neural activity without surgery or anesthesia. High-frequency TMS (typically 10-20 Hz) applied to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex increases activity in this region, enhancing its ability to regulate emotional responses and reduce anxiety.
Research suggests TMS may reduce anxiety through several mechanisms:
Enhanced top-down regulation: Stimulating the prefrontal cortex strengthens its ability to modulate overactive limbic regions, particularly the amygdala. This helps reduce excessive fear responses and worry.
Improved attention control: TMS helps the brain disengage from threatening or anxiety-provoking thoughts, reducing rumination and anxious preoccupation.
Normalized brain connectivity: Studies show TMS improves communication between the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and brain regions like the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex and nucleus accumbens, networks involved in mood and anxiety regulation.
Neuroplastic effects: Repeated stimulation induces lasting changes in neural circuits, potentially reversing the abnormal patterns seen in anxiety disorders.
Real-world clinical outcomes from the NeuroStar Clinical Outcomes Registry analyzed 1,514 patients with anxious depression (major depression with moderate-to-severe anxiety symptoms). Results showed approximately 50% or greater reductions in both anxiety and depression scores following TMS treatment. Changes in anxiety and depression symptoms strongly covaried, meaning as depression improved, anxiety symptoms improved proportionally.
A study of patients with generalized anxiety disorder found that 11 of 13 individuals (84.6%) achieved remission following TMS treatment. Meta-analyses examining TMS for GAD show large effect sizes favoring active TMS over sham treatment.
Multiple FDA-cleared devices are now available for treating anxious depression, including BrainsWay Deep TMS (cleared 2021), NeuroStar Advanced Therapy (cleared 2022), and Magstim Horizon Inspire (cleared 2024), all demonstrating safety and efficacy in reducing anxiety symptoms.
Treatment begins with a thorough assessment by our board-certified psychiatrists or psychiatric nurse practitioners. We’ll review your anxiety symptoms, previous treatments tried, current medications, overall health status, and treatment goals. We’ll conduct standardized anxiety assessments (such as the GAD-7) and determine if you have comorbid depression. We’ll also perform a motor threshold test to calibrate the TMS device to your individual physiology.
TMS for anxiety typically involves:
Some protocols may include additional stimulation sites or alternate approaches based on your specific anxiety presentation. Our team will design a personalized protocol based on current evidence and your individual needs.
You’ll sit comfortably in a private treatment room while the TMS coil is positioned over your scalp. The treatment produces clicking sounds and creates a tapping sensation on your head. Most patients tolerate this well, though some experience mild scalp discomfort during the first few sessions.
You’ll remain awake and alert throughout treatment. Many patients read, listen to music, or simply relax. You can drive yourself to and from appointments and resume normal activities immediately after each session.
We use standardized anxiety scales to track changes in worry, physical symptoms, panic attacks, and overall functioning. We also monitor depression symptoms if present, as anxiety and depression often improve together. Regular check-ins with our clinical team help us understand how treatment is affecting your day-to-day life and adjust our approach as needed.
This ongoing monitoring helps ensure you’re receiving optimal benefit from treatment and allows us to make protocol adjustments if needed.
If benefits occur, they typically emerge gradually over several weeks of treatment. Some patients notice subtle improvements in physical anxiety symptoms (muscle tension, sleep quality) within the first 2-3 weeks, followed by reductions in worry and anxious thoughts. Most meaningful improvements are seen after 20-30 sessions.
Effects continue to build even after the treatment course ends. Many patients experience their maximum benefit 1-4 weeks after completing the initial series of treatments.
TMS may be appropriate if you:
FDA clearance status: TMS is FDA-cleared for anxiety symptoms in adults with major depressive disorder (anxious depression). Use for standalone GAD, panic disorder, or social anxiety disorder is considered investigational, meaning the evidence is promising but not yet sufficient for FDA approval for these specific indications.
Not a replacement for therapy: TMS works best when combined with evidence-based psychotherapy like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). The neuroplastic changes from TMS may actually enhance your ability to benefit from therapy by improving emotional regulation and cognitive control.
Individual response variability: While clinical outcomes are encouraging, response varies between individuals. Some patients experience substantial relief while others see more modest improvements. There is currently no way to predict with certainty who will respond best.
Time commitment: Daily weekday appointments for 4-6 weeks require significant scheduling flexibility. Our extended hours (7 AM – 8 PM) help accommodate work and family obligations.
We recognize that living with anxiety is exhausting. Constant worry, physical tension, avoidance of situations, and the impact on your work and relationships take a toll. Our team provides trauma-informed, compassionate care that respects your individual experience and treatment preferences.
Our comfortable, private treatment rooms offer a calm environment designed to reduce, not increase, your anxiety. We work closely with you to address concerns, adjust approaches as needed, and ensure that treatment aligns with your overall wellness goals.
All TMS sessions are supervised by our trained clinical staff with immediate access to our board-certified psychiatric providers who have extensive experience in both brain stimulation and anxiety treatment.
Insurance Coverage: TMS for anxious depression (major depressive disorder with anxiety symptoms) is typically covered by most major insurance plans when medical necessity criteria are met. This usually requires documentation of inadequate response to at least one antidepressant medication trial.
TMS for standalone anxiety disorders (GAD, panic disorder, social anxiety) without comorbid depression is generally not covered by insurance, as these are investigational indications. These treatments are provided on a cash-pay basis.
We verify insurance benefits before starting treatment and provide transparent pricing information during your consultation. Our team will work with you to understand your coverage and out-of-pocket costs.
If you’re struggling with anxiety that hasn’t responded adequately to traditional treatments, or you’re looking for a non-medication approach to complement your current care, we’re here to help you understand whether TMS might be appropriate for you.
We serve patients throughout Montgomery and Delaware Counties, including communities along the Main Line, Abington, Dresher, and surrounding areas.
Research on TMS for panic disorder is limited but promising. Some studies show reductions in panic attack frequency and severity. TMS appears most effective when panic disorder occurs alongside depression. If you have panic disorder, we’ll discuss realistic expectations during your consultation based on the current evidence.
TMS is designed to work alongside, not replace, your current treatments. Many patients are able to reduce or discontinue medications after successful TMS treatment, but this decision should be made collaboratively with your prescribing physician. Never stop anxiety medications abruptly, as this can cause withdrawal symptoms and rebound anxiety.
TMS is generally well-tolerated. The most common side effects are:
Serious side effects are rare. The most serious risk is seizure, which occurs in approximately 1 in 30,000 treatments or less. Unlike anxiety medications, TMS does not cause sedation, weight gain, sexual dysfunction, or cognitive impairment.
Disclaimer: TMS for standalone anxiety disorders (GAD, panic disorder, social anxiety) is an investigational treatment approach and is not FDA-approved for these specific indications. TMS is FDA-cleared for anxiety symptoms in adults with major depressive disorder. Individual results vary significantly. This information is for educational purposes and does not constitute medical advice. Consult with qualified mental health providers to determine if TMS is appropriate for your situation.
