Spravato® Nasal Spray

What is Spravato® ?

Spravato® is derived from a compound historically used as an anesthetic, which has also shown benefits in treating depression. Recently, this compound earned FDA approval specifically for use as a nasal spray for individuals with treatment-resistant depression.

What is Spravato® Treatment Like?

Spravato® has the potential to alter perception during the first two hours after administration, so it must be given in a clinic setting.

Treatment is done on an outpatient basis. Patients must arrange transportation in advance, as they cannot drive after treatment.

With the nasal spray, you self-administer three doses, spaced five minutes apart, under the supervision of trained staff. You will remain in the clinic in a calm, private setting for two hours of observation to ensure any potential side effects subside.

Spravato® is used in combination with a traditional antidepressant. The goal is for Spravato® to offer fast relief from depressive symptoms while the other medication begins to take effect.

How Does Spravato® Treat Depression?

Spravato® functions differently from standard antidepressants. Most conventional medications increase chemicals like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine—messengers that help brain cells communicate. The theory is that higher levels of these messengers improve communication between brain cells, which can boost mood.

Spravato® increases levels of glutamate, the brain’s most common chemical messenger. This has a more widespread effect on brain cells, potentially improving symptoms more quickly.

What is Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy?

Our Spravato® program includes psychedelic-assisted therapy, where patients meet with a trained psychotherapist during the same week they receive treatment. After the experience, a follow-up session focuses on a process called integration. This therapy helps the patient understand, reflect on, and find meaning in the experience.

Patients are encouraged to explore their thoughts, feelings, and memories. The goal is to use these insights to foster personal growth and emotional change.
